Sunday Times: Perth’s problem with sleeplessness

The Sunday Times interviewed Perth sleep experts including Dr Melissa Ree from Sleep Matters for their article on sleep difficulties in today’s paper (page 20-21 and online).

The article emphasises that sleep problems are very common in our high stress, high tech world and that this is true across the age span. The good news is that there are effective long term solutions.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and Dr Melissa Ree emphasises that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first line treatment. Melissa also provides sleep tips for children, teenagers and those who use screens a lot in the evening.

Dr Hillman reminds readers that we should all value sleep and we should work to establish healthy routines. MS Carter discusses the use of hypnosis for poor sleep, and Mr Chamberlain discusses the importance of correct diagnosis and treatment for people who suspect they may have obstructive sleep apnea (where people stop breathing during the night).

We think it’s great to see sleep being discussed in the media, it is so important to get the message out there both about the importance of healthy sleep and that there are effective long term treatments that don’t rely on sleeping pills.
